Microsoft Eyes Switch 2 for Xbox Game Expansion Amid Continued Push for Multi-Platform Dominance
Microsoft appears to be doubling down on its cross-platform strategy, with reports surfacing that the tech giant is planning to bring select first-party Xbox games to Nintendo’s highly anticipated Switch 2. While specific titles have yet to be confirmed, the move aligns with Microsoft's broader efforts to expand the reach of its major franchises beyond its own hardware ecosystem.
This push isn’t entirely new—2024 saw the likes of Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush make the leap to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, despite their previous status as Xbox exclusives. And 2025 is shaping up to continue that trajectory. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle found its way to the PS5, while Doom: The Dark Ages and the long-rumored Oblivion Remastered hit PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox platforms simultaneously, all bolstered by day-one access through Xbox Game Pass.
According to a new report by Tom Warren of The Verge, the next step in Microsoft’s strategy involves porting titles to the Switch 2, a more powerful successor to Nintendo’s bestselling handheld. While Microsoft hasn’t officially named which games will make the jump, the Switch 2’s confirmed lineup—featuring Mario Kart World, upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom—signals strong third-party interest.
In addition, the Switch 2 will reportedly enhance performance for existing Switch games through free patches. Meanwhile, Microsoft may also be extending its hardware partnerships beyond Nintendo. A leak hints at the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally 2 handheld featuring dedicated Xbox integrations under the codename “Project Kennan,” potentially offering gamers yet another way to experience Xbox titles on the go.
With Nintendo scheduled to appear at Gamescom later this year, fans are eagerly watching to see whether the companies will share more about this collaboration. Despite the lack of specifics, one thing is clear: Microsoft is fully committed to ensuring Xbox games are playable anywhere—regardless of platform.
